why would you not think the people in gitmo are innocent? if they had any evidence that they were guilty they would have been tried and not released. the people who put these men in gitmo obviously have some notion that they're guilty and wouldn't want to release someone who they believe is guilty so that they can attack again. instead they'd just rather sweep the innocents under the rug by keeping them in this secret prison and let someone else deal with them.?

Personnel problems go through the roof, and it works both ways: all a female sailor has to do is accuse a male (especially an officer or CPO) to ruin their career, and you'd better believe they know it. Putting both sexes together is a recipe for trouble that can't be managed short of having security cameras throughout the ship. Incidentally, just before I got out (as a male officer), I had occasion to "unofficially" learn just how many female sailors on at least one submarine tender were gay, and I doubt that that ship was unique (Adm Metcalfe of the Atlantic Fleet made a supposedly confidential statement to the effect it wasn't, around that same time frame.) How is that going to play out, when they're forced to live together in very tight quarters in a traditionally male dominated world? It seems to work in the Scandinavian Navy, but their culture is completely different and the subs are small diesel boats that make short runs. I could believe it could work if a ship was 100% female (and the fighting could be managed: check out the all-female groups on reality TV, that part isn't faked.) In the US it takes 14-15 years to make a submarine captain (since we have only large nukes - there's no way to get experience in diesel boats like other navies do), so no female CO's or XO's anytime soon. The first women aboard subs will be unqualified to do anything (just like new men), which means that they ALL will be grunts and outsiders by definition, which will raise the tension even more. The crew will have to 1) treat them like normal new guys (and get in trouble); 2) shun them (and get in trouble); or 3) hate them as dead weight/potential career wreckers that they are forced to accept (and the whole boat gets in trouble.)I'm actually not opposed to the idea, I just don't see how it could ever work. Gay soldiers in foxholes is _nothing_ compared to the problems this will cause.

All of a sudden people are pissed over the continued campaign in Afghanistan when all along that was the right war at the right time. Iraq is a different story. Obama didn't start the war but he has to finish it in the right way otherwise all the lives lost by our soldiers will be for naught. I think that what he's doing at this moment is removing a propaganda tool. No longer will they be able to use torture as a means of recruitment. Somehow this was lost on the last administration. I'd rather things be done right given the circumstances than having a knee jerk reaction. With regards to Iran, at least we'll be in a much better position internationally. Instead of going it alone will most likely have the support of countries around us with a meaningful number of troops as opposed to the token amounts that we had for Iraq.
