Meaning, we are born with a rather rigid foundation for our personalities and they will develop like our body type.The difference is in how we furnish the foundation. An intelligent child will flourish with good education. While still intelligent, if it is reinforced that the child is stupid, the child will doubt itself. If the child is not educated, it can still be educated.A child that has a normally even-tempered personality potential will be ruined through traumatic abuse, while a child prone to fear and insecurity can be built up through good habits to feel good about themselves.The real trick in life, the real work, where you win, is overcoming. But that is true of life in general, overcoming challenges and obstacles. Regardless of your nature or instinct, being able to temper it and improve upon it is the key. And in that sense, conservatives are dead-on. We ARE what we make of ourselves. But to say we are all the same is like saying we all have green eyes. We are different. Not all men are created equal, but through self-determination we have an equal chance to be successful.For those who are not as blessed with the gifts of others, we can give them the gift of responsibility and self-determination. However, life is not a fair fight. When we golf, we play to handicaps to make it even. It's up to us to play within ourselves to our handicap. Liberals are right in that some people need to level the playing field to help others. But it doesn't mean hitting their ball for them if you are better.There are reasonable limits on both the left and the right. The problem is that the right is prone to absolutes, black and white. No reasonable limits. And the problem with the left is that they don't know when to stop and give tough love. You can teach a man to fish, but once he's fed and no longer starving you need to take him to the lake with a fishing pole. But you can't get him to fish for himself if he is dying from starvation. |
